This Privacy Policy explains how Comet Inc. ("Comet", "we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects personal information when you use our website at cometinc.ca and the Comet classroom platform (the "Service"). We take the privacy of students and educators seriously.
1. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Professor account information — the name and email address you provide when registering, and a securely hashed version of your password. We never store passwords in plain text.
- Classroom data — student names and the participation records created during class, including attendance, poll and quiz responses, and participation grades. This information is typically entered or generated within a class run by a professor or institution.
- Inquiries — if you contact us through our inquiry form, we collect your name, email, organization, role, and message.
- Technical information — limited server logs such as IP address and request metadata, used to operate, secure, and rate-limit the Service.
2. How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide core features — attendance, participation, polling, quizzing, and grading;
- Authenticate professor accounts and keep them secure;
- Respond to inquiries and communicate with you about the Service;
- Operate, maintain, monitor, and improve the Service, including protecting it against fraud and abuse.
3. Our role regarding classroom data
For student classroom data, Comet acts on behalf of the professor and their institution. The professor or institution is responsible for having the authority to enter student information and for obtaining any consent required by their institution or applicable law before using the Service.
4. How we share information
We do not sell personal information. We share information only in these limited cases:
- Service providers — trusted vendors that host and support the Service (for example, our cloud hosting provider, Microsoft Azure), acting under confidentiality obligations and only as needed to run the Service;
- Legal requirements — when we are required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Comet, our users, or others.
5. Data storage and security
The Service is hosted on Microsoft Azure. We protect information with measures including encryption in transit (HTTPS), password hashing, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard safeguards.
6. Data retention
We retain personal information for as long as an account or class remains active, or as needed to provide the Service. When a class or account is deleted, the associated data is removed. You may also request deletion of your information as described below.
7. Your rights
Consistent with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and other applicable privacy laws, you may request to access, correct, or delete your personal information. To make a request, contact us using the details below. Where classroom data is involved, we may direct your request to the professor or institution responsible for that data.
8. Students and minors
Comet is intended for use in post-secondary and institutional settings and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove it.
9. Cookies and analytics
On our public website we use cookie-based analytics to understand how visitors find and use the site. These services load only after you accept them through the cookie banner shown on your first visit — if you decline, no analytics cookies are set and no analytics scripts run.

- Microsoft Clarity — anonymized usage insights such as aggregated heatmaps and session activity, used to improve the site. See Microsoft's Privacy Statement.
Essential cookies required to operate the Service — for example, your login session — are always active and are not covered by the banner. You can withdraw your consent at any time by clearing this site's cookies and site data in your browser.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
